Sasha Webb, Stolen Identity Refund Fraud, Alabama 2013

Montgomery, AL – Sasha Webb, a former medical records clerk at the Alabama Department of Corrections in Elmore County, has been indicted for stolen identity refund fraud, according to George L. Beck Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama.

Webb, who was arrested on December 20, 2013, is charged with conspiracy to file false claims, mail fraud, and aggravated identity theft. The indictment alleges that Webb sold inmate identification data from the corrections facility to Jacqueline Slaton and Harvey James, who then used this information to file hundreds of false tax returns claiming over $1 million in refunds.

Charlie Jackson, a resident of Montgomery, was also indicted for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Jackson, who was arrested on January 15, 2014, is accused of obtaining stolen identities between October 2010 and April 2013 to file false tax returns, with the refunds directed to prepaid debit cards in other names.

An indictment does not prove guilt; both defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. If convicted, Webb and Jackson face significant sentences, including up to 20 years for wire and mail fraud counts, two years for aggravated identity theft counts, and five years for conspiracy counts. They also face fines, forfeiture, and mandatory restitution.

The investigation into this case was conducted by special agents from the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation, U.S. Postal Inspectors, and the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office. Trial Attorneys Jason Poole, Charles Edgar Jr., and Michael Boteler of the Tax Division are handling the prosecution, with assistance from Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd Brown.
