Mark Anthony Barrett, Child Pornography Distribution, MO 2023

Liberty, Missouri, resident Mark Anthony Barrett, 60, is headed to federal prison for eight years without parole after being convicted of attempting to distribute child pornography over the internet. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Stephen R. Bough, marks the end of a grim chapter in a case exposing the dark corners of online child exploitation.

Barrett pleaded guilty on Oct. 6, 2017, to using peer-to-peer file-sharing software to download and share graphic images and videos of child sexual abuse. Federal authorities, acting on a search warrant, seized a desktop computer, a laptop, and five hard drives from his residence. One hard drive alone contained 272 images and 76 video files—many depicting prepubescent females, including a particularly violent video involving a female toddler.

Investigators determined Barrett had been viewing child pornography for more than two years. The material was not only downloaded but also made accessible to others on the file-sharing network, amplifying the reach of the abuse and compounding the trauma inflicted on the victims. The court ordered Barrett to pay $5,000 in restitution to one victim, with a $3,000 option if paid within 30 days.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Catherine A. Connelly and investigated by the Kansas City Police Department and the FBI. Authorities emphasized that every download perpetuates the cycle of abuse and that individuals like Barrett are not anonymous—law enforcement is watching and acting.

This prosecution was part of Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in 2006 to combat the rising epidemic of child sexual exploitation. The program unites federal, state, and local agencies to hunt down offenders, dismantle networks, and rescue children from ongoing abuse.

Barrett will face 15 years of supervised release upon completing his prison term, during which he will be closely monitored as a registered sex offender. The case serves as a stark reminder that digital crimes carry real-world consequences—and that justice, though methodical, does catch up.
