Two Eagle Butte Women Sentenced for Assault
In a disturbing case of violence, two Eagle Butte, South Dakota, women were sentenced for their roles in assaulting a victim who suffered serious bodily injury.
Lisa Lone Eagle, 36, and her half-sister Kendra Belt, 41, were convicted of Assault With a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury, respectively. On November 7, 2016, U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentences.
Lone Eagle was sentenced to 63 months in custody, while Belt received 37 months. Both women will be under supervised release for three years following their release from custody. They were also ordered to pay a special assessment of $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The crime occurred on September 5, 2015, at the victim’s residence, where Lone Eagle had been living for approximately a year and a half. Lone Eagle and Belt, along with others, were present at the residence when the incident took place.
According to the investigation, Lone Eagle became angry with the victim and punched him at least eight times. Belt joined in, hitting the victim as well. Lone Eagle then kicked and stomped the victim multiple times, wearing cowboy boots, and hit him with the head of a sledgehammer. Belt also kicked the victim while he was down and attempted to strangle him.
The victim lost consciousness at some point, leading the two women to believe he was dead. They attempted to hide the victim’s body in the crawlspace but were unable to do so. They then covered the victim with a blanket, poured kerosene on it, and attempted to set it on fire, but were unsuccessful.
Fortunately, the victim regained consciousness, got up, and escaped the residence, collapsing nearby where he was discovered by a neighbor. The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller handling the prosecution. The defendants were turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service immediately after sentencing.
