Little Eagle Woman Sentenced for Brutal Burglary Spree
ABERDEEN – Amanda Lorraine Bobtail Bear, a 31-year-old woman from Little Eagle, South Dakota, was handed a 30-month stint in federal prison for her role in a heinous burglary case that left a child shaken.
On April 1, 2023, Bobtail Bear’s world came crashing down when she learned her 25-year-old brother-in-law had been kissed by a 12-year-old girl. But instead of taking a deep breath and moving on, Bobtail Bear snapped, teaming up with several cohorts – including her own 14-year-old niece – to break into the girl’s home on the Standing Rock Reservation.
The group’s twisted game plan was to attack the 12-year-old girl, with Bobtail Bear kicking her and egging on her niece to “hit her some more!” even as the victim begged them to stop. The girl’s wheelchair-bound father tried to intervene, but Bobtail Bear’s brother restrained him, leaving the child vulnerable to the assault.
Thankfully, the 12-year-old girl only sustained minor injuries, but the emotional scars will likely linger for a long time. And Bobtail Bear’s actions will have consequences for years to come. The 31-year-old was indicted by a federal grand jury in June 2023 and pleaded guilty on October 30, 2023.
This case was prosecuted in federal court because the Major Crimes Act mandates that certain violent crimes committed in Indian country be handled federally, rather than at the state level. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem led the charge, with the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services providing vital investigative support.
U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann handed down the sentence on May 20, 2024, also slapping Bobtail Bear with a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. She was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where she’ll begin serving her 30-month sentence and four years of supervised release.
