Aberdeen, SD – Amanda Lorraine Bobtail Bear Sentenced for First Degree Burglary
Aberdeen, SD – In a shocking turn of events, a Little Eagle woman has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for her role in a shocking First Degree Burglary case.
Amanda Lorraine Bobtail Bear, 31, was handed down the sentence by U.S. District Judge Charles B. Kornmann on May 20, 2024. She was also ordered to pay a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100 and serve four years of supervised release.
The case began on April 1, 2023, when Bobtail Bear learned that a 12-year-old girl had kissed her 25-year-old brother-in-law. In a fit of rage, Bobtail Bear and several other individuals, including her 14-year-old niece, broke into the 12-year-old girl’s Little Eagle home, which is located within the Standing Rock Reservation.
According to court documents, Bobtail Bear kicked the 12-year-old girl and encouraged her niece to ‘hit her some more!’ while the 12-year-old begged them to stop. The 12-year-old girl’s wheelchair-bound father was restrained by Bobtail Bear’s brother during the assault, preventing him from protecting his daughter. The 12-year-old girl sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack.
The case was prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office due to the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that mandates certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian country be prosecuted in federal court instead of State court.
This case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs – Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Carl Thunem prosecuted the case. Bobtail Bear was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has vowed to continue to prosecute violent crimes committed in Indian country, ensuring that justice is served and victims receive the support they need.
