Local 1456 Accused of Election Tampering in New Jersey

NEWARK, N.J. – In a shocking turn of events, the U.S. Attorney’s Office has filed a lawsuit against Port Police and Security Guards Union, Local 1456, for allegedly tampering with the union’s election process.

The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, accuses Local 1456 of establishing bylaws that rendered 98 percent of the union’s membership ineligible to be elected to leadership positions.

The alleged scheme began with a September 2021 meeting, where any union member who missed the meeting was automatically disqualified from running for office. This meant that more than a year before the election, nearly all union members were effectively barred from seeking leadership positions.

Fast forward to November 1, 2022, when Local 1456 held a nomination meeting. The union’s officers then disqualified at least four individuals who were or sought to be nominated, paving the way for a slate of five unopposed officers to take the top spots.

The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul W. Kaufman of the Camden office.

The suit alleges that Local 1456’s actions were a brazen attempt to rig the election and maintain control over the union. The U.S. Attorney’s Office is seeking to compel Local 1456 to hold a fair election under the Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act of 1959.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced the lawsuit, vowing to protect the rights of union members and ensure that the election process is fair and transparent.

The complaint is an allegation of unlawful conduct, and the government must still prove its case in federal court.

The lawsuit is a major blow to Local 1456, which has been accused of election tampering. The outcome of the case will have far-reaching implications for the union and its members.
