Carlos Aranda, Bank Fraud and Aggravated Identity Theft, California 2023

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In a brazen case of postal greed, Carlos Aranda, 41, and Daniel Hunt, 38, both of Sacramento, were sentenced to 66 and 57 months in prison, respectively, for their roles in a conspiracy that stole nearly $250,000 through bank fraud and aggravated identity theft tied to postal thefts.

According to court documents, Aranda, Hunt, and others got together to carry out the heist, stealing postal locks, creating postal keys, and snatching mail to obtain stolen checks. The conspirators would then gather at motel rooms and elsewhere to ‘wash’ these stolen checks, altering them to make them cashable.

The conspirators, driven by a lust for easy cash, would then try to negotiate, deposit, and/or cash out these altered checks, raking in a total of nearly $250,000 in check fraud. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of such egregious crimes.

U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced the sentencing, which resulted from an investigation by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. Assistant United States Attorney Elliot C. Wong prosecuted the case, bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Aranda and Hunt thought they could get away with their scheme, but ultimately, their greed led to their downfall. Their prison sentences serve as a warning to those who would seek to exploit the postal system for personal gain.

This case is a testament to the effectiveness of law enforcement in keeping our communities safe from such financial crimes. As the investigation showed, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service is committed to protecting the public from postal thefts and ensuring that those who commit such crimes are held accountable.

With their sentences, Aranda and Hunt will have ample time to reflect on the consequences of their actions. For the victims of this crime, justice has been served, and their stolen funds will never be regained. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and cooperation in preventing and reporting postal thefts.
