GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE: Lonetta Nichole Cross, 44, of Poteau, Oklahoma, has been sentenced to nine months in prison and three years supervised release for her involvement in a scheme to steal and pass stolen United States Postal Service money orders. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White in Muskogee.
Cross stood accused of conspiring with others to steal, receive, possess, pass, and utter stolen US Postal Service Money Order Forms between December 24, 2015, and January 13, 2016. The indictment stated that Cross intended to convert the money orders for her own use or gain, as well as the use and gain of another.
The investigation leading to Cross’s arrest was a collaborative effort between the Pocola Police Department, the Shady Point Police Department, the Leflore County Sheriff’s Office, and the United States Postal Service. Assistant United States Attorney Kristin Harrington represented the United States in court.
Cross will remain in custody until transported to a federal facility to serve her nonparoleable sentence. The case serves as a stark reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to for financial gain, even at the expense of the postal system.
