TYLER, Texas – In a gritty blow to the Longview, Texas drug underworld, 72-year-old Jerry Don Castleberry has been convicted of federal drug trafficking charges. The Department of Justice announced today that Castleberry was found guilty by a jury on March 11, 2014, following a two-day trial before U.S. District Judge Michael H. Schneider.
Castleberry, who until May 1, 2013, conspired with others to distribute large quantities of methamphetamine from Dallas sources, was also caught with numerous firearms and ammunition – all related to his drug trafficking activities. His former membership in the Bandidos motorcycle gang added another layer to the case.
According to court information, Castleberry’s methamphetamine originated from Mexico. The investigation revealed a sophisticated network of dealers throughout the Longview area, all linked back to Castleberry. He now faces a minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison, and his sentencing date is yet to be announced.
The indictment against Castleberry was returned on June 27, 2013, by a federal grand jury. The Drug Enforcement Administration and the Gregg County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Baldwin prosecuted the case.
Castleberry will also forfeit two Harley Davidson motorcycles and a Corvette Stingray as part of his sentence. This conviction is a significant win for law enforcement in their ongoing battle against organized crime and drug trafficking in Texas.
