TYLER, Texas – In a hard-hitting blow to the drug trade in Palestine, Clifford Murray, a 29-year-old resident of the town, has been sentenced to federal prison for drug trafficking violations, according to U.S. Attorney John M. Bales.
Murray pleaded guilty on November 6, 2013, to possession with intent to distribute approximately 11.6 grams of crack cocaine. Today, U.S. District Judge Michael H. Schneider imposed a sentence of 60 months in federal prison. In addition, Murray was ordered to pay a $20,000 judgment and face forfeiture of seized firearms and cash.
The evidence against Murray revealed that on March 14, 2013, he was apprehended at a residence on South Jackson Street in Palestine with crack cocaine, his intended distribution stock. Murray confessed to owning three pistols, a pistol-grip shotgun, ammunition, and $8,907 in cash, all tied to his drug operations.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Palestine Police Department, the Anderson County District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble handled the prosecution.
Murray’s sentence is a stark reminder of the harsh penalties for drug trafficking in Texas and the dedication of law enforcement agencies to combat drug-related crime.
