Berea Pharmacist Lonnie Hubbard, 41, Convicted of Prescription Pill Trafficking in Kentucky
A federal jury in Lexington, Kentucky, has convicted pharmacist Lonnie Hubbard of 71 counts, including the illegal dispensing of prescription pain pills and pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in methamphetamine. The verdict follows an eight-day trial and approximately three hours of deliberation.
Hubbard, owner of RX Discount Pharmacy in Berea, was found guilty of 56 counts of drug-related offenses, including the unlawful distribution of controlled substances and pseudoephedrine. He was also convicted of 12 counts of money laundering and two conspiracy charges.
The jury heard evidence that Hubbard sold prescription pain pills, including oxycodone, without a legitimate medical purpose to addicts and drug traffickers from central and eastern Kentucky. He also sold pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in methamphetamine, to individuals who intended to use it to manufacture the illicit drug.
Testimony revealed that Hubbard’s pharmacy was one of the only places in Kentucky that would fill out-of-state prescriptions for pain medication. He charged $600 to $1,000 to fill a cocktail of prescriptions, which included excessive amounts of oxycodone. Hubbard made approximately $2.2 million in cash from the illicit drug sales and used the money to purchase luxury items, including three residences, a boat, and several vehicles.
Hubbard’s wife, Meggan, was sentenced earlier this month for her involvement in the scheme and received a five-month prison sentence. Three other co-defendants have pleaded guilty and been sentenced. Hubbard is scheduled to be sentenced on June 6th and faces up to 20 years in prison on the conspiracy offenses, 20 years for the unlawful distribution of pseudoephedrine, and 10 years for the individual money laundering counts.
The investigation was conducted by the DEA, IRS, USDA, Kentucky Board of Pharmacy, Inspector General for the Cabinet of Health and Family Services, Berea Police Department, Mt. Vernon Police Department, Madison County Sheriff’s Office, and the Appalachian HIDTA.
