HARRISBURG, PA – Shane A. Lopez, 29, of Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, is facing a long stretch behind bars after being sentenced to 22 years in federal prison. The sentence, handed down June 10, 2024, by U.S. District Court Judge Christopher C. Conner, isn’t just for his initial crime – drug trafficking – but for a sickening descent into the world of child sexual abuse and a brazen escape from custody.
Lopez was already serving time for federal drug trafficking when he bolted from a residential rehabilitation facility in Harrisburg back in November 2020. He remained on the run until May 21, 2021, when authorities tracked him down in Mahanoy City. But the apprehension didn’t just uncover an escapee; it revealed a digital dungeon of depravity. A search of Lopez’s belongings turned up a trove of child pornography, a disturbing collection that would ultimately seal his fate.
Investigators meticulously dissected Lopez’s phone and online accounts, uncovering over 1,000 images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of children. The horror didn’t stop there. Among the files was a video made by Lopez featuring an 18-month-old girl, a detail that undoubtedly weighed heavily on Judge Conner during sentencing. The details are gruesome and demonstrate a clear pattern of predatory behavior.
On November 20, 2023, Lopez pleaded guilty to both the charge of sexual exploitation of children and the escape from a detention facility. He didn’t try to deny the evidence, the sheer volume of which painted a damning picture. U.S. Attorney Gerard M. Karam’s office successfully argued for a substantial penalty, recognizing the severity of the crimes and the vulnerability of the victims.
Judge Conner delivered a 20-year sentence for the child pornography offenses, followed by a consecutive two-year sentence for the escape. Upon his release, Lopez will also be subject to five years of supervised release, a small measure of oversight considering the monstrous nature of his crimes. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Ford led the prosecution, ensuring justice was served in this particularly disturbing case.
This case was investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Marshal Service, and is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative aimed at combating child sexual exploitation. The Department of Justice launched the project in 2006 to coordinate federal, state, and local resources to identify and prosecute predators and rescue victims.
