A 36-year-old Mason City woman is facing serious time behind bars after pleading guilty to being a drug user in possession of firearms.
Brittany Graham, 36, of Mason City, Iowa, was in federal court in Sioux City, Iowa, on June 3, 2024, where she admitted to possessing four pistols while using marijuana in August 2022.
According to prosecutors, Graham was an unlawful user of marijuana at the time of the incident, and as such, was not allowed to possess firearms. This charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
Graham remains free on bond pending sentencing, which will be set after a presentence report is prepared. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel, and was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Mason City Police Department, the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office, and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.
The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime. Through PSN, a broad spectrum of stakeholders work together to identify the most pressing violent crime problems in the community and develop comprehensive solutions to address them.
This case highlights the dangers of mixing guns and drugs, and the consequences that can follow. Graham’s guilty plea serves as a warning to others who may be tempted to engage in similar behavior.
