Loretta L. Janssen, a 58-year-old woman from Council Bluffs, Iowa, has been sentenced to 12 months and one day in prison for her role in a wire fraud scheme. According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Janssen began using her former employer’s business bank account to pay her personal credit card bills in 2015. This illicit practice continued until 2021, resulting in a total of $200,963.11 being paid out of the company’s account without authorization.
Janssen, who worked as a bookkeeper for the company, used her online account to initiate the payments every month from June 2015 to July 2021. The brazen scheme allowed her to pay her personal credit card bills using her employer’s funds, leaving her former employer footing the bill for her expenses.
U.S. Attorney Steven Russell announced the sentence, stating that Janssen’s actions were ‘deceptive and dishonest.’ The sentence also includes a three-year term of supervised release, during which time Janssen will be subject to strict monitoring and oversight. There is no parole available in the federal system.
Janssen was ordered to pay restitution to her former employer in the amount of $200,963.11, the total amount of money she embezzled over the course of six years. This sentence sends a clear message that those who engage in financial deception will be held accountable for their actions.
The case was investigated by the United States Secret Service and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office. The U.S. Attorney’s office praised the efforts of these agencies in bringing Janssen to justice and recovering the stolen funds.
In a statement, U.S. Attorney Steven Russell said, ‘The sentence in this case reflects the seriousness with which we take financial deception and the harm it causes to employers and employees alike. We will continue to work tirelessly to protect the public and hold those responsible for financial crimes accountable.’
Janssen’s sentence serves as a reminder that financial deception has serious consequences, and those who engage in such behavior will face the full force of the law. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and provide updates as more information becomes available.
