Charleston, SC – In a shocking expose of financial chicanery, Jamaican nationals Rojay Lawson, 24, and Theresa Lawson, 53, have been sentenced to over five years in federal prison for their pivotal roles in a lottery scam that bilked elderly victims across the country out of millions. The duo pleaded guilty to orchestrating a fraudulent sweepstakes scheme, where they convinced unsuspecting seniors that they had won life-altering prizes, only to demand exorbitant fees and taxes as payment.
According to court evidence, the cunning criminals would inform their victims of supposed winnings ranging from multi-million dollar cash prizes to luxury vehicles. They then directed these vulnerable individuals to send payments via various means, including prepaid cards, money orders, and direct wire transfers. The proceeds were funneled overseas to co-conspirators in Jamaica.
Their greed knew no bounds; the Lawsons extracted over $700,000 from at least 175 victims, with around 70 being over 80 years old, including a 96-year-old senior citizen. The court heard harrowing tales of emotional and financial devastation wrought by this deplorable scheme.
Judge Bruce Howe Hendricks handed down the stiff sentences, imposing 78 months in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. There is no parole available within the federal system, and the Lawsons were ordered to pay a staggering $405,401.00 in restitution. Their actions have been deemed heinous, with Judge Hendricks noting the impact on the elderly victims who had placed their trust in a fraudulent lottery.
The investigation into this case was a collaborative effort between the United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). Assistant United States Attorneys Emily Limehouse and Amy Bower spearheaded the prosecution, ensuring that justice was served for the countless victims of this despicable crime.
As the sentence is meted out, it serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by sophisticated scams targeting our most vulnerable citizens. The sentence of Rojay Lawson and Theresa Lawson will undoubtedly send a chilling message to those who seek to exploit the elderly through such ruthless methods.
