CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA — A gritty verdict from the grimy streets of North Charleston: Jonathan Reece Scarborough, 36, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for producing child pornography. This harrowing case unearthed a dark trail of sexual exploitation.
The nightmare began on September 25, 2019, when the North Charleston Police Department received a chilling report from a 10-year-old girl who had been sexually abused by Scarborough. The investigation only deepened as law enforcement uncovered a sickening digital trove of child porn at Scarborough’s residence and devices.
Computer forensics examiners combed through Scarborough’s cell phone and laptop, finding graphic evidence of his sickening crimes against the young victim. They also discovered hundreds of child pornography images, including prepubescent and pubescent minors being sexually assaulted by adults.
United States District Judge Bruce Howe Hendricks meted out a 360-month sentence followed by a lifetime term of court-ordered supervision. With no parole in the federal system, Scarborough’s future is now one of perpetual incarceration.
This case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, the project unites federal, state, and local resources to hunt down predators like Scarborough.
