Columbia, SC – In a chilling development that has rattled the community, 53-year-old Vern McPherson of Westminster, South Carolina, has entered a guilty plea in federal court for possession and transporting child pornography, as reported by United States Attorney Beth Drake.
The case took a global turn when HSI Cyber Crimes Center identified McPherson’s IP address linked to a server in Switzerland harboring explicit content. Swiss Federal Police seized the server, which led to the discovery of McPherson’s involvement.
Following the lead, federal authorities secured a search warrant for McPherson’s residence. A thorough examination of his computer yielded 693 images and 2 videos of child pornography, painting a disturbing portrait of the defendant’s actions.
United States District Judge Bruce H. Hendricks of Charleston will determine the sentence after reviewing the presentence report prepared by the U.S. Probation Office. The maximum penalty for McPherson includes a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment for up to 20 years, plus a special assessment of $100.
This investigation was carried out by agents of ICE-Homeland Security Investigations, with Assistant United States Attorney Bill Watkins handling the case from the Greenville office. The charges against McPherson are part of Project Safe Childhood, a federal initiative aimed at combating online child exploitation.
