A 40-year-old Rapid City man has been sentenced to federal prison for failing to register as a sex offender.
Louis Andrew Rabbitt, Jr., was sentenced to 27 months in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and a special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund in the amount of $100.
Rabbitt was convicted of Sexual Abuse of a Minor in August 2001. As a result of this conviction, he is required to register as a sex offender.
On July 19, 2019, Rabbitt began a period of supervised release and initially registered at a residence in Rapid City. However, he subsequently moved from his registered address and failed to update his sex offender registration.
As a result of his failure to register, an arrest warrant was issued and on April 1, 2021, Rabbitt was arrested in Mission, South Dakota.
The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case.
Rabbitt was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of registering as a sex offender and updating one’s registration information when moving to a new residence.
