Firefighter’s Greed Catches Up: Local Firefighter Arrested in Bribery Scandal
According to sources, Washington D.C. firefighter Louis Joey Mitchell, 50, of Capitol Heights, Maryland, has been arrested on conspiracy and bribery charges.
Mitchell is accused of accepting payments from a District of Columbia contractor in exchange for directing purchase agreements and orders to the contractor. He allegedly confirmed delivery of and payment for goods that the contractor did not deliver.
The alleged bribery occurred over several years, with Mitchell accepting a bribe of $20,000 from the contractor. His accomplice, FEMS contract administrator Charity Keys, 43, of Bowie, Maryland, also accepted bribes, including a $20,000 bribe from the contractor.
Both Mitchell and Keys are said to have worked together to direct purchase agreements and orders to the contractor and confirmed delivery of and payment for goods that the contractor did not deliver.
The investigation is being led by the FBI’s Washington Field Office and the D.C. Office of Inspector General. The case is being prosecuted by the Fraud, Public Corruption and Civil Rights Section of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia.
An initial appearance is scheduled today in the District of Columbia before Magistrate Judge Robin M. Meriweather.
At this time, Mitchell and Keys are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The case is ongoing.
