Louis Michael Healy, a 40-year-old resident of Hays and an enrolled member of the Fort Belknap Tribes, has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for multiple crimes.
On August 15, 2013, Healy was sentenced to 327 months in prison in U.S. District Court in Great Falls, Montana, after being found guilty of assault resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated sexual abuse, and abusive sexual contact.
The victim, who drove Healy to the store on October 13, 2012, drank a little from a can of Smirnoff, while Healy consumed an entire can very quickly. They drove to a hill where Healy drank two or three more cans, and the victim drank an additional can.
Healy then asked the victim to marry him, but she refused unless he could prove he had ceased speaking with his ex-girlfriend. Healy and the victim returned to his home on the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation, where they turned on Healy’s computer and the victim read emails indicating Healy was still speaking with his ex-girlfriend.
The victim became upset and Healy grabbed her neck with his right hand, pushing her across the floor in a rolling computer chair. Due to the force of the push, she crashed and hit her head. When she awoke, Healy had his hand on her throat, applying pressure. He then walked to the kitchen and grabbed a knife, standing over the victim and placing it to her throat.
The victim was forced to get up, and Healy told her to get into the bedroom. He instructed her to lie down and said, ‘if you don’t stop crying, you know what you’re going to get and we both aren’t coming out of the room, so stop crying.’ The victim believed Healy was going to kill her, but Healy eventually let her up and gave her water and a popsicle. She began to vomit due to the drinking or strangulation she had experienced.
Healy then sexually assaulted the victim, who continued to tell him to stop. The victim eventually escaped and ran to the next-door neighbor’s home, where she was safely inside when Healy realized she was gone and chased after her.
Healy was eventually subdued by police using pepper spray and was taken into custody. The victim was transported to the hospital, where she was treated for trouble swallowing due to strangulation and had linear petechial bruising around her throat.
Healy’s sentence includes 327 months in prison, a special assessment of $300, and 20 years of supervised release.
