ALEXANDRIA, La. – Louis Vernon Jackson, 38, of Natchitoches, Louisiana, is facing a potential life sentence after a federal jury found him guilty late yesterday of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, being a felon in possession of firearms, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. The four-day trial, presided over by U.S. District Judge Terry A. Doughty, revealed a widespread drug operation that spanned multiple states.
The case, spearheaded by the ATF and a coalition of federal and local agencies, began unraveling in December 2019. Agents uncovered evidence that Jackson was a key player in a drug trafficking conspiracy involving seven other individuals. Surveillance in April 2020 led agents to a Natchitoches motel where Jackson was observed meeting with an associate, suspected of conducting a drug deal. A traffic stop following the meeting revealed keys to a motel room, which a subsequent search uncovered a Marlin rifle, a loaded SCCY 9mm pistol, extended magazines, and ammunition. As a convicted felon, Jackson was legally barred from possessing any firearms or ammunition.
Jackson’s release on bond didn’t slow the investigation. Just over a month later, on May 13, 2020, agents surveilled Jackson at a hotel in the Alexandria area. Another search warrant yielded a significant haul: a large quantity of methamphetamine, a digital scale used for weighing drugs, and over $11,000 in cash. The evidence painted a clear picture of Jackson’s continued involvement in large-scale drug trafficking, despite his previous run-in with the law.
U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown emphasized the scope of the investigation, noting it stretched across Louisiana and Mississippi. “This was the culmination of an investigation that spanned multiple federal districts… We will not tolerate the distribution of methamphetamine and illegal firearm possession in the Western District of Louisiana,” Brown stated. All seven co-defendants have already pleaded guilty and await sentencing.
Jackson now faces a minimum of 15 years, and potentially life, in prison on each of the drug charges due to a sentencing enhancement related to his prior criminal history. The firearms charge carries a potential 10-year sentence. He’s also looking at up to 15 years of supervised release and a staggering fine of up to $20,000,000. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Cytheria D. Jernigan and Brian C. Flanagan.
The investigation involved the Department of Homeland Security Investigations, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Bureau of Prisons, the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office, and the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office. This multi-agency effort underscores the commitment to dismantling drug trafficking operations and removing dangerous criminals – and their weapons – from the streets of Louisiana.
