Gerald Duane Iron Shooter, Sexual Abuse of a Minor, South Dakota 2012

A Lower Brule man has been sentenced for his role in the sexual abuse of a 13-year-old girl. Gerald Duane Iron Shooter, 21, was found guilty of sexually abusing the minor.

According to court documents, the incident occurred in January 2012 during a party at a residence in Lower Brule. Iron Shooter, along with two other adult men, was drinking with several underage girls, including the 13-year-old victim. The victim and Iron Shooter eventually ended up in a bedroom where they engaged in sexual intercourse. Iron Shooter admitted to knowing the victim’s age and that she was too young to engage in any type of sexual activity.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Lower Brule Law Enforcement Agency. Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson said, "The sexual abuse of a minor is a serious crime that can have lasting effects on the victim and their family. We will continue to work tirelessly to protect our communities from individuals who commit such heinous acts."

Iron Shooter was sentenced to 14 months in custody, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
