McLaughlin Man Guilty of Sexually Abusing Drunken 14-Year-Old

Robert Arnold Stand, 25, has been sentenced to 108 months in custody for sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl who was intoxicated at his residence in McLaughlin, South Dakota.

According to the investigation, Stand was drinking with a group of friends on October 5, 2013, when the minor victim began to drink excessively and eventually lost consciousness. Stand then brought the girl into the bathroom, removed her pants, and engaged in a sexual act while she was unable to consent.

Stand’s actions were a clear violation of the victim’s trust and a gross disregard for her well-being. The fact that he knew the girl was intoxicated and unable to give consent only adds to the severity of the crime.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced the sentencing, which was handed down by U.S. District Court Charles B. Kornmann on June 9, 2014. In addition to the 108-month sentence, Stand was also ordered to serve 5 years of supervised release, pay $100 in restitution, and pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Troy R. Morley prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Law Enforcement Agency. Stand was immediately taken into custody by the U.S. Marshals Service after the sentencing.

The case serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of sexual abuse and the importance of protecting the vulnerable. We must continue to work towards a society where such crimes are not tolerated and those who commit them are held accountable.

Stand’s sentence is a testament to the determination of the prosecution and the courage of the victim in coming forward. It is our hope that this outcome will bring some measure of closure to the victim and her family and serve as a warning to others who would seek to take advantage of the vulnerable.
