Lucas Gregory Woodard, Attempting to Escape, Louisiana 2017

A brazen attempt to flee the Federal Correctional Center in Oakdale, Louisiana, has ended in defeat for Lucas Gregory Woodard, 41. Woodard pleaded guilty to one count of attempted escape, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine.

On October 11, 2017, U.S. Bureau of Prison staff discovered Woodard and his codefendant, Nicholas Bickle, 40, ensnared in razor wire on the perimeter fence of the correction center. Staff had to pry open and cut the coils of razor wire in several places in order to remove the pair.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI and U.S. Bureau of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph T. Mickel is prosecuting the case. Woodard and Bickle are scheduled to be sentenced on October 1, 2018.

Woodard’s plea will become final when accepted by U.S. District Judge Robert G. James. Bickle, who also pleaded guilty to one count of attempted escape, is facing the same penalties as Woodard.

The attempted escape is a serious offense that undermines the security of our correctional facilities. It is fortunate that the staff at the Federal Correctional Center were able to prevent the pair from escaping.

Woodard’s case highlights the need for increased security measures in our correctional facilities. The Federal Bureau of Prisons must take steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
