LAREDO, Texas – A brazen attempt to import millions of dollars worth of methamphetamine has landed a foreign national in custody, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Texas.
Luis Alberto Garza Cisneros, a 33-year-old Mexican national, has been charged with attempting to import over 400 kilograms of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of approximately $18 million. The indictment alleges that on May 6, 2023, Cisneros attempted to enter the country through the World Trade Bridge Port of Entry while driving a tractor trailer.
Law enforcement officials referred the vehicle to secondary inspection, where an X-ray revealed anomalies. A search of the tractor’s diesel tanks allegedly discovered approximately 413.98 kilograms of methamphetamine in 24 five-gallon buckets, according to the charges.
The drugs have an estimated street value of approximately $18 million, making this a significant blow to the illicit drug trade in the region. If convicted, Cisneros faces up to life in prison and a possible $10 million maximum fine.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations with the assistance of Customs and Border Protection. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Bajew is prosecuting the case.
An indictment is a formal accusation of criminal conduct, not evidence. A defendant is presumed innocent unless convicted through due process of law.
Luis Alberto Garza Cisneros is expected to appear for his arraignment before a U.S. magistrate judge in the near future. The defendant’s current status is pending arraignment.
