Luis Carlos Rodriguez-Elizondo, a 23-year-old man from Monterrey, Mexico, has pleaded guilty to conspiring to possess with intent to distribute 6.15 kilograms of cocaine, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
In a shocking revelation, a routine inspection at the Lincoln Juarez Port of Entry in Laredo, Texas, led to the discovery of the massive cocaine haul. On October 2, 2022, Rodriguez-Elizondo attempted to drive through the port, claiming he was visiting Six Flags and planned an overnight trip. However, his story did not add up as he did not have luggage and a believable travel itinerary.
An X-ray scan revealed anomalies near the center console of his vehicle. Law enforcement discovered several bundles containing cocaine, which had an estimated street value of $150,000.
The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew Isaac and Michael Makens are prosecuting the case.
Luis Carlos Rodriguez-Elizondo faces up to life in prison and a possible $10 million maximum fine. U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo will impose sentencing on April 11.
This is a prime example of the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the United States. Rodriguez-Elizondo’s conviction serves as a warning to those attempting to smuggle narcotics across the border.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance at ports of entry and the determination of law enforcement agencies in preventing the flow of illicit substances.
