Batons Rouge Man Sentenced to 33 Months in Prison for Possessing Contraband

A Baton Rouge resident has been sentenced to 33 months in federal prison for possessing contraband in prison. Dervelle T. Barnes, 37, was convicted of the charge and sentenced by Chief Judge Shelly D. Dick.

According to the investigation, Barnes was arrested on May 18, 2022, at the Russell B. Long Federal Building and United States Courthouse. On the following morning, two deputies entered Barnes’ dorm-style cellblock due to a smoke odor and observed a clear plastic bag containing white pills near Barnes’ stomach. Deputies seized the bag and pills, which were later tested to contain oxycodone and acetaminophen.

Barnes admitted to knowingly possessing oxycodone while in prison. The case was investigated by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorney Alan A. Stevens prosecuted the case.

As part of his sentence, Barnes will serve three years of supervised release following his term of imprisonment. He was initially arrested on May 18, 2022, and the contraband was discovered the following morning.
