A former Bolivian anti-narcotics chief has been sentenced to 25 years in US prison for his role in a massive cocaine importation scheme.
Maximiliano Davila Perez, the former director of Bolivia’s Fuerza Especial de Lucha Contra el Narcotráfico (FELCN), was convicted of conspiring to import cocaine and related firearms offenses in a US court.
According to the US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Jay Clayton, Davila Perez used his position of power to facilitate massive cocaine trafficking, diverting law enforcement from investigating favored traffickers and providing heavily armed personnel as security for cocaine shipments.
The former anti-narcotics chief conspired with others to manufacture, ship, and provide armed protection for over one metric ton of cocaine destined for the US, specifically New York. He was extradited from Bolivia in December 2024 and sentenced to 25 years in prison.
DAVILA PEREZ’s actions were described as a ‘betrayal of public trust’ by DEA Administrator Terrance Cole, who said that no badge, title, or position would shield those who choose crime over duty.
The case highlights the global threat of narco-corruption and the need for international cooperation to combat it, said US Attorney Clayton.
The investigation was led by the DEA’s Special Operations Division, with assistance from the Bolivian authorities.
