Former Deputy Constable Sentenced to Prison

In a shocking turn of events, former Cameron County Deputy Constable Luis Enrique Guevara has been ordered to serve 15 months in federal prison for his role in transporting illegal aliens. The 45-year-old Brownsville resident pleaded guilty to the charges on June 4, 2015.

According to court documents, Guevara was stopped by a Robstown Police officer on April 9, 2015, for speeding as he was driving a Nissan Pathfinder north on U.S. Highway 77. During the traffic stop, Guevara claimed to be a former police officer from Cameron County and a former narcotics officer with the Los Fresnos Police Department.

However, further investigation revealed that Guevara had transported illegal aliens several times prior to his arrest, and had been paid $2,500 per alien transported. At the time of his arrest, Guevara was a reserve deputy constable in Cameron County, a position he no longer holds.

U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos handed down the sentence, which will be immediately followed by three years of supervised release. The charges against Guevara are the result of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations, with the assistance of the Robstown Police Department.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Chad W. Cowan. Guevara will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of human trafficking and the importance of holding those who engage in such activities accountable. As a former law enforcement officer, Guevara’s actions are particularly egregious, and we hope that this sentence will serve as a warning to others who may consider similar actions.
