Luis Jose Mejia Arias, Narcotics Distribution, Massachusetts 2017

Luis Jose Mejia Arias, 24, a Dominican national, was sentenced in federal court yesterday on charges tied to a relentless narcotics operation across Waltham, Massachusetts. The defendant distributed heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine on eight separate occasions, feeding the deadly drug pipeline that has ravaged communities across New England.

On Aug. 17, 2017, Mejia Arias pleaded guilty to eight counts of possession with intent to distribute controlled substances. His guilty plea came after federal investigators compiled video, audio, and physical evidence from multiple controlled buys conducted with an undercover officer between September 2015 and May 2016.

U.S. Senior District Court Judge Mark L. Wolf handed down a 16-month prison sentence, followed by three years of supervised release. Immigration officials will move swiftly to deport Mejia Arias upon completion of his sentence, a common outcome for non-citizens convicted of federal drug felonies.

The transactions occurred in and around Waltham, a middle-ring suburb increasingly targeted by federal drug task forces due to its proximity to major transportation routes and urban distribution hubs. Each of the eight sales involved measurable quantities of heroin, cocaine, or fentanyl — the latter responsible for thousands of overdose deaths nationwide.

United States Attorney Andrew E. Lelling and Michael J. Ferguson, Special Agent in Charge of the DEA’s New England Field Division, jointly announced the sentencing. The Suburban Middlesex County Drug Task Force provided critical field support, helping to coordinate surveillance and undercover operations that sealed the case.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Miranda Hooker and Susan Winkler, both members of Lelling’s Narcotics and Money Laundering Unit, prosecuted the case. Their office continues to prioritize mid-level distributors like Mejia Arias, who act as connective tissue in sprawling drug networks operating under the radar.
