Defendant Indicted for COVID Relief Scheme
Luis Martinez, 35, of Birmingham, Alabama, was indicted for his role in a scheme to defraud taxpayer-funded COVID relief programs of over $1 million. According to court documents, Martinez and his co-conspirators submitted false claims for COVID relief funds, which were then paid out by the government. The indictment alleges that Martinez and his co-conspirators used the funds for personal gain, rather than to support COVID-19 relief efforts in their community.
The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on January 10, 2023, and Martinez was arrested on February 2, 2023. Martinez is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail awaiting trial.
According to the indictment, Martinez and his co-conspirators submitted false claims for COVID relief funds through a company called “Relief Solutions Inc.” The company was allegedly set up by Martinez and his co-conspirators to collect and process COVID relief funds. The indictment alleges that Martinez and his co-conspirators used the funds for personal gain, including buying luxury items and paying off personal debts.
The indictment alleges that Martinez and his co-conspirators defrauded the government of over $1 million in COVID relief funds. The indictment also alleges that Martinez and his co-conspirators committed mail and wire fraud in connection with their scheme.
Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite Jr. of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division praised the work of investigators and prosecutors in bringing the indictment against Martinez and his co-conspirators. “The indictment of Luis Martinez and his co-conspirators is a significant step in holding accountable those who would seek to defraud taxpayer-funded programs,” Polite said.
The case is being prosecuted by the Justice Department’s National Fraud Enforcement Division. The investigation was conducted by the FBI’s Birmingham Field Office and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General.
