SCRANTON, PA – Ricky Charles Patterson, 44, of Luzerne County, is staring down the barrel of a potential life sentence after a federal grand jury indicted him on serious drug and firearm charges. Patterson is accused of peddling deadly narcotics while illegally possessing a weapon, adding another layer of danger to the streets of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
According to Acting United States Attorney John C. Gurganus, the indictment alleges that on or about May 2, 2025, Patterson possessed with intent to distribute both fentanyl and methamphetamine – both Schedule II controlled substances. These aren’t just recreational drugs; they’re poison flooding our communities, and Patterson allegedly profited from their spread.
The feds say Patterson didn’t just have the drugs, he had the hardware to protect his operation. The indictment claims he possessed a Smith & Wesson .44 caliber revolver while committing the drug trafficking offenses. Even more damning, authorities allege Patterson knew he was a prohibited possessor – a convicted felon – making the firearm possession itself a separate crime.
The investigation was a coordinated effort, bringing together the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF), the Luzerne County Drug Task Force, and the Kingston Police Department. These agencies worked tirelessly to build a case against Patterson, demonstrating a commitment to dismantling drug networks and taking dangerous individuals off the streets. Assistant United States Attorney Tatum Wilson will be leading the prosecution.
This case isn’t isolated. It’s part of Operation Take Back America, a sweeping nationwide initiative aimed at crushing cartels, tackling transnational criminal organizations, and securing our communities. The operation consolidates resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) to maximize impact. If convicted on all counts, Patterson faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, followed by a term of supervised release and a hefty fine. However, it’s crucial to remember that an indictment is not a conviction. Patterson is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The judge will ultimately determine his fate, taking into account federal sentencing guidelines and applicable statutes.
