Jason Dwight Mackenzie, Prison Assault, Louisiana 2024

Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook dropped a bombshell in Louisiana, announcing the harsh sentences for three inmates at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock who left a fellow inmate severely injured following an unprovoked assault.

Jason Dwight Mackenzie, 36, of Baltimore, Md., was handed down a sentence of 84 months behind bars, with Robert Shipp Jr., 32, of Tyler, Texas, and Calvin Skelton, 42, of Great Falls, Mont., each receiving a sentence of 48 months. U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell imposed these penalties for one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

The brutal attack occurred on October 21, 2015, when the trio targeted an unsuspecting inmate as he was quietly reading a newspaper. They pummeled him with punches and kicks to the head, upper body, and legs until they were winded. Upon the arrival of correctional officers, the attackers retreated to their cells.

The victim was rushed to the prison infirmary and then transported to a hospital, where he underwent multiple surgeries to repair severe head injuries sustained during the assault.

Investigations by the FBI and the U.S. Bureau of Prisons led to the conviction of Mackenzie, Shipp Jr., and Skelton, who were also sentenced to three years of supervised release following their prison terms. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mike O’Mara prosecuted this chilling case with relentless dedication.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers within correctional facilities and the justice system’s commitment to holding those responsible for such heinous acts accountable.
