Madison Gunman Gets 7 Years for Stop-N-Go Heist
SUN PRAIRIE, WI – Mekhi Moss, 20, of Madison, Wisconsin, will spend the next seven years in a federal prison cell after being sentenced yesterday for the armed robbery of a Stop-N-Go convenience store in Sun Prairie. Chief U.S. District Judge James Peterson handed down the sentence, citing Moss’s dangerous history and the need to protect the public. Moss pleaded guilty to the charges on July 7, 2021.
The robbery occurred on January 21, 2020. Moss, along with an accomplice, stormed the Stop-N-Go, both brandishing handguns and terrorizing employees and customers. Authorities later discovered the firearm used by Moss had been stolen just days prior, adding another layer of criminality to the already brazen act. This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision; Moss was already a walking indictment, with eleven pending state cases and multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest at the time of the heist.
During the sentencing hearing, Judge Peterson didn’t mince words. He described Moss as a “destructive force” and made it clear the primary purpose of the sentence was public safety. The judge emphasized the severity of the armed robbery and Moss’s established pattern of serious criminal behavior. It’s a clear message: pulling a gun on working people won’t be tolerated. Following his prison term, Moss will face four years of supervised release, a period where his movements will be closely monitored.
The investigation into the robbery was a joint effort between the Sun Prairie Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These are the cops who did the hard work, pounding the pavement and gathering the evidence that put Moss away. Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan skillfully prosecuted the case, ensuring justice was served. It’s a reminder that when local and federal agencies work together, criminals don’t stand a chance.
Federal authorities have tied this case to Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative focused on reducing violent crime. PSN prioritizes collaboration between federal and state prosecutors, and all levels of law enforcement, specifically targeting gun crime, illegal firearm possession by felons, and violent offenses involving firearms. It’s a program aimed at getting guns out of the hands of those who would do harm.
The seven-year sentence sends a strong signal to would-be robbers in the Madison area and beyond. While prison won’t undo the trauma inflicted on the Stop-N-Go employees and customers, it will, hopefully, prevent Moss from inflicting further harm on the community. This case is closed, but the Grimy Times will continue to track violent crime across the nation, exposing the darkness and holding perpetrators accountable.
