MACON, Ga. – Alphonzo Clyde, 45, of Macon, has pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a charge that carries a maximum of 15 years in prison.
Clyde, the founder of the Mafia criminal street gang, entered the plea on April 10 before Chief U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell. His sentencing is scheduled for July 3. Clyde will also face three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine, with no parole in the federal system.
The Mafia gang, tied to violent crime and large-scale fentanyl distribution in Macon and Middle Georgia, has caused “grave harm” to the community, said U.S. Attorney Peter D. Leary. “Federal, state and local law enforcement is focused on dismantling all violent criminal enterprises and holding their associates accountable in our collaborative effort to keep people safe.”
Clyde’s arrest on October 8, 2023, was the result of an outstanding probation violation warrant. Officers from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the Jones County Sheriff’s Office took him into custody after spotting a digital scale with a white powdery substance on the front passenger seat of his SUV. A marijuana odor was also detected emanating from the vehicle, and a Taurus G2S 9-millimeter handgun was found inside the glovebox.
Clyde, who has multiple prior felony convictions, is prohibited from possessing a firearm. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and the community they serve.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, and the Jones County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joy Odom is prosecuting the case for the Government.
