NEW HAVEN, CT – Shawn R. Fuller, 37, of West Haven, is headed to federal prison after a brazen scheme of mail theft spiraled into a drug bust. Fuller was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer to 12 months of imprisonment and three years of supervised release, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.
The case began with suspicions of mail package theft while Fuller was employed as a mail carrier in Meriden. On April 17, 2023, investigators witnessed Fuller at the Meriden post office openly pilfering from the mail. Court documents reveal Fuller was observed opening two packages, pocketing items, and stashing them in the trunk of his vehicle before abruptly ending his workday.
A routine traffic stop conducted by Hamden Police quickly escalated. A K9 unit alerted officers to the possible presence of narcotics, leading to a search of Fuller’s trunk. What they found wasn’t just stolen goods – it was approximately four kilograms of a substance later confirmed to contain cocaine. Fuller was immediately arrested.
On February 16, 2024, Fuller admitted guilt to the charge of theft of mail by a postal employee. While out on a $100,000 bond, Fuller is now required to surrender to authorities on August 20 to begin serving his sentence. The investigation didn’t stop at just Fuller’s actions; it revealed a wider network of potential wrongdoing.
The investigation was a collaborative effort led by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Narcotics and Bulk Cash Trafficking Task Force and the Drug Enforcement Administration. Support was provided by the Hamden and West Haven Police Departments, as well as the Connecticut Army National Guard and multiple other local police departments. This task force demonstrates a clear commitment to rooting out corruption within the postal system.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert S. Dearington and Brendan J. Keefe prosecuted the case. This conviction serves as a harsh reminder that those entrusted with public service will be held accountable for abusing their positions, especially when it involves both theft and the trafficking of dangerous narcotics. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any further developments.
