San Antonio’s Central Texas Detention Facility has been rocked by scandal as former guard Barbara Jean Goodwin, 35, pleaded guilty to sexually abusing an inmate while under her watch. United States Attorney Richard L. Durbin, Jr., alongside U.S. Marshal David Sligh and FBI Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs, confirmed the charges against Goodwin.
Goodwin admitted that she engaged in inappropriate sexual acts with a federal prisoner between February 2016 and August 2016. The abuse came while she was in her capacity as a custodial, supervisory, or disciplinary authority over the inmate.
This morning, before United States Magistrate Judge John W. Primomo, Goodwin’s plea of guilty to one count of sexual abuse of a ward was entered. She now faces up to 15 years in federal prison for her actions. Sentencing has been set for June 12, 2017, before Senior United States District Judge David A. Ezra.
The investigation into Goodwin’s conduct was a joint effort by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant United States Attorneys Sarah Wannarka and Christina Playton are representing the government in this case.
Goodwin remains on bond until her sentencing date. The grim revelations have raised serious concerns about prison oversight and staff integrity, with calls for a thorough review of correctional facility practices in Texas.
