Mail Thief Caught in Luzerne County
A 35-year-old Wilkes-Barre Township man has been charged with stealing mail from a truck, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Joseph Stefanski, a trucking company employee, allegedly removed mail and its contents from mail containers in his truck while transporting mail from one post office to another. The thefts occurred between December 2014 and February 2015 in Luzerne County.
Postal customers in Dallas, Shavertown, Plains, Trucksville and Luzerne Township complained about missing mail or mail that was received with contents taken. Some of the missing items included cash, gift cards, and lottery tickets.
Stefanski was arrested on an indictment unsealed on March 1, 2016. The indictment charges him with theft of mail, a federal offense that carries a maximum penalty of 5 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a $250,000 fine.
The case is being investigated by the United States Postal Service, Office of Postal Inspection Services, and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. O’Hara.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim or has further information should contact Postal Inspector David Heinke, United States Postal Service, at 877-876-2455. It’s worth noting that an indictment is only an allegation, and Stefanski is presumed innocent until found guilty in court.
A sentence following a finding of guilt would be imposed by the Judge after consideration of the applicable federal sentencing statutes and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account the nature, circumstances, and seriousness of the offense, the history and characteristics of the defendant, and the need to punish, protect the public, and provide for the defendant’s educational, vocational, and medical needs.
