Maine Man Charged for Armed Assault on Capitol Police

A Maine man has been slapped with felony and misdemeanor charges for allegedly assaulting law enforcement during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol.

Christopher Belliveau, 38, of Sanford, Maine, was arrested yesterday in North Berwick, Maine, and is expected to make his initial appearance in the District of Maine.

The FBI alleges that Belliveau, armed with a bullhorn, pointed at a police officer and then discharged a canister of bear pepper mace at the officer, fleeing the area after the officer was knocked to the ground by another rioter.

According to court documents, Belliveau joined hundreds of rioters who advanced up the Northwest Stairs and breached the Capitol, entering the building through a broken window and traveling to an area known as the Crypt before exiting 15 minutes later.

The case is being investigated by the FBI’s Boston and Washington Field Offices, with valuable assistance provided by the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department.

Since the Jan. 6 breach, over 1,450 individuals have been charged in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the event, including more than 500 individuals charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.

A complaint is merely an allegation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. Those with tips can call 1-800-CALL-FBI (800-225-5324) or visit tips.fbi.gov to report any information.
