Malachi Patton Handley, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Iowa 2023

A 23-year-old Cedar Rapids man has admitted to being a felon in possession of a firearm, a crime that could land him in prison for up to 15 years.

Malachi Patton Handley, 23, of Cedar Rapids, pleaded guilty in federal court in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to court documents, Handley was convicted of three felonies prior to possessing a SCCY pistol between December 2022 and March 2023.

Handley, who remains in custody of the United States Marshal pending sentencing, faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years’ imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a program aimed at reducing violent crime by focusing enforcement efforts on the most violent offenders and partnering with locally based prevention and reentry programs.

Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the Cedar Rapids Police Department, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Marion Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Handley’s sentencing will be set after a presentence report is prepared.
