Man Sentenced to Over 25 Years for Hobbs Act Robbery in Memphis

Memphis, TN – In a shocking turn of events, Malik Motley, 25, has been sentenced to 303 months in federal prison following his conviction of a Hobbs Act robbery committed in October 2021.

The heinous crime took place on October 3, 2021, at a Memphis-area Dollar General store. Motley, donning a black mask, entered the store and demanded money from the register at gunpoint. When the cashier was unable to open the cash register, Motley shot her in the face at point-blank range before fleeing the scene.

Two days later, Motley was apprehended in an abandoned house. A search of his residence led to the discovery of the clothing he wore during the robbery and a silver Smith & Wesson .357 revolver, loaded with three live rounds of ammunition.

Motley pleaded guilty to one count of Hobbs Act Robbery and one count of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence in October 2023. On July 20, 2024, United States District Court Judge John T. Fowlkes handed down the sentence, ordering Motley to serve five years of supervised release after his prison term.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Safe Streets Task Force and the Memphis Police Department. United States Attorney Kevin Ritz expressed gratitude towards Assistant United States Attorney Raney Irwin, who prosecuted the case, as well as the law enforcement partners who worked tirelessly to bring Motley to justice.

The sentence serves as a stark reminder of the severity of Hobbs Act robbery and the consequences that come with it. The community can take solace in knowing that Motley will be held accountable for his heinous actions.
