Honolulu, Hawaii – In a shocking turn of events, Maliu Tauheluhelu, a 37-year-old man from Oahu, was arrested on Friday, June 3, for his alleged involvement in a massive drug trafficking operation. The indictment, which was unsealed earlier this morning, charges Tauheluhelu with drug trafficking, firearm, illegal gambling business, and money laundering offenses.
According to court documents, Tauheluhelu led a criminal organization that distributed methamphetamine and cocaine within the District of Hawaii. His associates, Maafu Pani, 37, and Touanga Niu, 21, were also arrested in connection with the indictment. Pani oversaw the criminal organization’s drug trafficking and illegal gambling activities on Maui, while Niu assisted with the transportation of controlled substances and unlawful proceeds.
Desmond Morris, 38, is also charged in the indictment, but remains at large. The investigation, which was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Task Force Officers from the Maui Police Department, uncovered a complex web of illegal activities that spanned multiple islands.
The indictment alleges that Tauheluhelu’s organization used an airline that lacked Transportation Security Administration screening to transport unlawful proceeds from Maui back to Oahu. The group’s activities are believed to have generated significant profits, which were laundered through various means.
Tauheluhelu, Pani, and Niu are expected to be presented in Hawaii federal court on Monday, June 6, 2022, before United States Chief Magistrate Judge Kenneth J. Mansfield. A press conference was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 6, 2022, at the Maui Police Department.
The prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Micah Smith. The case is a significant blow to organized crime in Hawaii, and marks a major victory for law enforcement agencies in the state.
Tauheluhelu is currently being held without bail, pending his arraignment. If convicted, he faces significant prison time and fines.
