Federal Way’s Lenny Brikn Jr., 19, has pleaded guilty to using a firearm during a drug trafficking crime that turned into a tragic shooting, announced U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan.
Brikn, Jr. admitted to Using a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence and Drug Trafficking, which carries a mandatory minimum seven-year prison term. Both the prosecution and defense anticipate recommending this sentence when Brikn is sentenced on August 1, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik.
In an interview, U.S. Attorney Durkan commented, ‘Unfortunately this case proves once again: Guns and drugs are a deadly mix. The use of guns in the drug business endangers the public and will not be tolerated.’
The incident began when David Ross, 35, from Renton, Washington, an associate, and Brikn Jr., arrived at a Federal Way apartment complex to sell marijuana. Ross, despite having two previous felony drug convictions that bar firearm possession, was armed with a gun.
Brikn Jr. and his brother, Deshawn Boykin, drew “Mac 10” style semi-automatic pistols and attempted to rob Ross and his associate of the drugs they were selling. The confrontation escalated as Ross fired at Brikn Jr. and Boykin, who fled. Boykin was struck twice and later died from his injuries at St. Francis Medical Center.
Ross faces charges of conspiracy to distribute marijuana, unlawful possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, which adds another mandatory minimum ten-year sentence. His trial is scheduled for June 2014.
The investigation into this violent incident was conducted by the Federal Way Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, with Assistant United States Attorney Todd Greenberg handling the prosecution.
