A Philadelphia man was sentenced to 10 years in prison for transporting victims in interstate commerce to engage in prostitution, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced today.
Mallie M. Evans, 37, previously pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Karen M. Williams to a count of the indictment against him charging him with transporting any individual in interstate commerce with the intent that such individual engage in prostitution. Judge Williams imposed sentence on May 23, 2024, in Camden federal court.
According to documents filed in this case and statements made in court, Evans recruited and coerced multiple victims to engage in prostitution for Evans’s financial benefit and transported victims across state lines between Philadelphia and central and southern New Jersey to engage in prostitution. Evans used fraud, emotional manipulation, physical violence, and threats of death and bodily injury to coerce the victims into engaging in commercial sex acts for his benefit.
Evans was sentenced to 120 months in prison and 10 years of supervised release. The prison term and supervised release are a result of his guilty plea to transporting any individual in interstate commerce with the intent that such individual engage in prostitution.
The investigation leading to the sentencing was conducted by special agents of the FBI, Newark Division, Trenton Resident Agency, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge James E. Dennehy. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alexander E. Ramey of the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s Criminal Division in Trenton.
The case is a stark reminder of the horrors of sex trafficking and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes. This case also highlights the critical role that law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI, play in investigating and prosecuting these crimes.
Evans’s sentence sends a strong message that sex trafficking will not be tolerated in our society. It is our hope that this case will bring some measure of justice to the victims and their families and serve as a warning to others who would engage in similar crimes.
