ELKINS, WEST VIRGINIA – A Randolph County man has been brought to justice after admitting to transporting more than $16,000 in stolen U.S. Savings Bonds across state lines.
Travis Charles White, 43, of Kerens, West Virginia, pled guilty to one count of ‘Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property’ in a federal court. The crime, which occurred in February 2017, saw White taking the stolen bonds from West Virginia to Colorado.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Danae DeMasi-Lemon is prosecuting the case on behalf of the government, with the West Virginia State Police leading the investigation.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael John Aloi presided over the case, which is a serious offense that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000.
According to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant.
The guilty plea is a significant blow to White, who faces a lengthy prison sentence and a hefty fine. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of law enforcement agencies working together to combat interstate theft and financial crimes.
