Buffalo Man Charged with Distributing Child Pornography
A 26-year-old man from Rapid City, South Dakota has been arrested and charged with distributing child pornography. Jesse Adams, a student at a local college, is facing a mandatory minimum penalty of five years in prison, a maximum of 20 years and a fine of $250,000 if convicted.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Fauzia K. Mattingly, the investigation began when an undercover agent in Utah received emails and images depicting child pornography from Adams. Mattingly stated that Adams described his communications with a nine-year-old girl and his contact with another fifth grader on the playground in his online chats.
The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The project brings together federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet and to identify and rescue victims.
The investigation was conducted by Special Agents of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of James C. Spero, Special Agent-In-Charge. A detention hearing has been scheduled for April 25 at 10:30 a.m. before Magistrate Judge Leslie G. Foschio.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Project Safe Childhood is a critical effort to protect our children from the growing threat of child sexual exploitation and abuse. This case demonstrates the importance of collaboration and coordination between law enforcement agencies to bring perpetrators to justice.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office is committed to ensuring that those who prey on children are held accountable for their crimes. We will continue to work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute cases like this one, and to support the victims of child exploitation and abuse.
