Columbus Man Convicted for Attempted Carjacking at Gunpoint
A Columbus man was convicted of attempting to steal a car at gunpoint in a terrifying incident that left the victim shaken. Darius Harbin, 21, was found guilty of attempted carjacking and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence after a week-long jury trial on January 25, 2016.
The crime took place on May 24, 2014, at around 3 a.m. when the victim pulled into a gas station after getting off work. While pumping gas, Harbin appeared at gunpoint and demanded that the victim remove his hand from his pocket and the gas pump from his vehicle. The victim was threatened with death if he didn’t comply, but he managed to wrestle the gun from Harbin in an almost eight-minute struggle.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and the Columbus Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Crawford Seals is prosecuting the case on behalf of the Government.
Sentencing for Harbin is scheduled for June 21, 2016, at 3:30 p.m. in Columbus, where he faces up to life imprisonment. Harbin has also entered a guilty plea for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in connection with the same incident.
The victim’s bravery in the face of danger is a testament to the determination of the people of Columbus. This conviction sends a strong message that attempted carjacking and brandishing a firearm will not be tolerated in our community.
