Man Faces 30 Years for Possessing Stolen, Obfuscated Gun

A Mineral County man is facing serious time behind bars after being accused of possessing a stolen, obfuscated firearm, Grimy Times has learned.

Donald Mark Tillotson, 24, of Burlington, West Virginia, was indicted on three counts: Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Possession of a Firearm with an Obliterated Serial Number, according to court documents.

The alleged offenses are said to have occurred in January 2021 in Mineral County, where Tillotson is accused of having a .40 caliber pistol with an obliterated serial number, believed to be stolen.

Prosecutors have revealed that Tillotson is a person prohibited from possessing firearms, further exacerbating the severity of the charges.

The potential penalties for Tillotson are steep, with up to 10 years of incarceration and a fine of up to $250,000 for each count, totaling 30 years behind bars and $750,000 in fines.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Lara Omps-Botteicher is leading the prosecution, with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office providing investigative support.

Tillotson’s case highlights the ongoing struggle to combat gun violence and crime in West Virginia.
