Jourdan Brown, Assault with Intent to Commit Murder, South Dakota 2015

The streets of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, witnessed a violent confrontation that has led to a serious indictment. Jourdan Brown, 18, has been charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Murder, Use of a Firearm during a Crime of Violence, and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon.

According to the indictment, Brown used a baseball bat to assault another man on January 14, 2015. The violence didn’t end there. He allegedly shot through the front window of the victim’s house later that same day.

On January 21, 2015, a federal grand jury handed down the indictment. Brown appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on January 23, 2015, and pled not guilty to the charges.

The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 20 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 2 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund for each charge. Restitution may also be ordered.

The investigation is being conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, and the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn N. Rich is prosecuting the case.

Brown was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service pending trial. A trial date has been set for March 31, 2015. The charges are mere accusations, and Brown is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
