Pine Ridge Man Indicted on Assault Charges
A violent crime has shaken the Pine Ridge community in South Dakota. Lee Larney, a 32-year-old man known as ‘Southern Wind,’ has been indicted on assault charges. According to the indictment, Larney kicked a man in the head during an argument and struck an Oglala Sioux Tribe police officer in the face.
On March 19, 2013, a federal grand jury returned an indictment against Larney, charging him with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon and Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. A second indictment was returned on April 16, 2013, charging him with Assault on a Federal Officer.
Larney appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Veronica L. Duffy on September 12, 2013, and pled not guilty to the indictments. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 20 years’ imprisonment and/or a $250,000 fine. The charges are merely accusations and Larney is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The investigations are being conducted by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety, the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins is prosecuting the cases.
Larney was remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service. A trial date has not been set. The community is waiting with bated breath for justice to be served.
In a statement, United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson said, ‘The safety of our community is our top priority.’ Johnson’s office is committed to holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
The people of Pine Ridge are demanding justice and accountability. They will not stand idly by while perpetrators of violent crimes are allowed to walk free. The community is rallying behind the victims and their families, offering support and solidarity during this difficult time.
The case is a stark reminder of the need for stricter laws and harsher penalties for violent crimes. The people of Pine Ridge will not rest until justice is served and the perpetrator is brought to account for his crimes.
